You must not have grown up in a very old house.

Your stove top probably has some sort of ventilation hood hanging over it, vented via ductwork to the outdoors. My parents' kitchen has a knob-ended stick to yank, and when you do the door releases and a built-in fan starts whirring, terrifying the dumb birds who perpetually think its warm vent is a good place to build a nest.
What most modern construction lacks is trap-doored walls, don't you think?
